Simply San Miguel Lifestyle Tours presents:
The Romance of San Miguel
Romance Writers' Vacation and Workshop

Saturday, February 17 - Friday, February 23, 2007

Travel is inherently romantic, engaging all the senses--sights, sounds, smell, taste and touch--and few cities in Mexico are more romantic than San Miguel de Allende. With its cobblestone streets, elegant Baroque architecture and vibrant colors, San Miguel is fertile ground for a romance writer's imagination.

If you've always wanted to write romantic fiction--which, by the way, accounts for 50 percent of all paperbacks sold--San Miguel de Allende is the place to be. From February 17-23, 2007, Simply San Miguel Lifestyle Tours will present a Romantically Inspired Tour and Writing Workshop with Janice MacDonald, author of nine books for Harlequin's SuperRomance line.

As you learn how to plot your book on a story board, develop three-dimensional characters, create conflict and write realistic dialogue, you'll also find inspiration and, perhaps, further story ideas, in behind the scenes tours of San Miguel. Visit folk arts museums, listen to music, learn some salsa moves and savor local cuisine and traditions.

Janice MacdonaldStoryboarding: The Key to Shapely Fiction

Dates: February 26, 2007 thru March 2, 2007
Location: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Instructor: Janice Macdonald

Banish Your Flabby Middle! Storyboarding: The Key to Shapely Fiction with bestselling romance novelist, Janice Macdonald, runs 5 days, February 26 - March 2, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students also receive a private half-hour consultation with Janice.

"Structuring a novel is difficult, especially for beginning writers," says Janice. " When I sat down to write my first book, I was elated to finish it in a very short time—then despondent to realize that at 10,000 words, it was far too short to be commercially viable. After adding some 65,000 words, I ended up with a book that was the right length, but without a logical flow to the narrative. Through trial and error, I developed a story-boarding technique which I now use for all my novels."

Janice Macdonald is a travel writer and romance novelist currently working on her ninth novel for Harelquin’s SuperRomance line. Her novels for Harlequin which include, The Doctor Delivers, The Man on the Cliff and Keeping Faith have been translated into many languages and have earned critical acclaim for their distinctive contemporary voice. A regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times on everything from dude ranches to the definitive luau, Janice’s travel experiences frequently become inspiration for her fiction. Her next Harlequin novel, Out of Control, will be available October 2006.

Janice's Storyboarding workshop is adaptable to any genre—romance, mystery, westerns, etc. Story boarding will help you:

  • Structure your story
  • Create pivotal turning points
  • Visualize key scenes
  • Create escalating dramatic tension
  • Avoid the sagging middle
  • Develop character arcs

    BONUS:

  • Seven Secrets to Successful Plotting

"Having read several books by Janice Macdonald, I've come to expect from her the best there is in the world of Harlequin Superromances. Macdonald does an excellent job with weaving various sub-plotlines together to make one cohesive novel. It is amazing what she does in the span of a few hundred pages. She takes on serious issues and blends them with the romance that the readers come to expect from a Harlequin book, but creates a story that I feel is a step above a simple romance. Most Harlequin Superromances do strive for this structure in their books, but I feel that Macdonald excels at what she does.. . highly recommended to those who love to read romances with a little bit more."
